Americans have always cherished gardens, from early colonial dooryard plots brimming with flowering herbs to the spectacular sculptural gardens that grace more formal landscapes today. All across the Unites States gardeners have adapted to the demands of local soil and climate conditions to produce amazing combinations of blooms and shrubs. With more than 80 full-color photographs of North America's most breathtaking gardens, this volume is a tribute to America's unique horticultural heritage.

The well-known American photographer John Pfahl has an ongoing fascination with Man's complex interaction with Nature. Extreme Horticulture is his photographic survey of gardening and the natural landscape at its boldest, most bizarre and most exuberant. Among the plants featured are vast flowers, terrifying sculptural cacti and succulents, outlandish topiary and extraordinary bonsai: these gardens were planned and planted by true eccentrics, with surreal creativity and often with great humor.
